The Z16 Malibu SS. Option RPO Z16 was introduced mid-year, 1965, to give the public a preview of what was to come the following year. Adding RPO Z16 to the Malibu SS was the logical choice in which to introduce the new Mk IV big-block 396 V8. This special Malibu SS included a host of performance and comfort options packaged in a sporty two-door hardtop or convertible. Chevrolet had finally played their ace in the hole.

Chevrolet produced just 201 Malibus with the rare Z16 option; 200 hardtops and just one convertible. Most of the Malibu Z16's went to top GM executives and famous personalities such as the late Dan Blocker of TV's Bonanza fame.

A small number were shipped to dealerships and made their way into the hands of the general public. With RPO Z16, Chevrolet had laid the groundwork for the introduction of the 1966 Chevelle SS 396 as a stand-alone model.

(source: Chevell Fan )

The Z-16 was totally different from its other 65 Chevelle siblings on the inside. When identifying a Z-16 from the exterior was not so easy due to its subtle differences. For starters, the Z-16 was available in only 3 colors... Regal Red, Tuxedo Black and Crocus Yellow.

The Malibu emblems reassigned to the front fenders behind the front wheel wells, the blackened out rear taillight panel and the front fender mounted 396 flag emblems as well as a rear trunk lid Malibu SS 396 emblem, the most significant designations of the Z-16, were subtle identifying cues to distinguish the Z-16 from other models in the Chevelle lineup.

Built on the Malibu SS model, the Z-16 was an impressive showcase of engineering ability. The car included a Muncie 4-speed transmission, slightly wider Firestone Gold-line tires, simulated mag wheel covers. To compensate for the heavier engine-bay-filling 396 V8, the car was built on a stronger convertible frame along with a brawnier suspension that included front and rear sway bars, heavy duty control arms, as well as mammoth 11-inch brakes and hydraulic power-assisted steering for more responsive handling.

New interior appointments were added including front and rear seatbelts with retractors, a wood grain steering wheel, a dash-mounted clock, a 160 mph speedometer and 6000 rpm tachometer and a multiplex AM/FM stereo system with underside dash mounted controls and more. All these features increased the base sticker price by more than half.

Overshadowing these dealer modified Camaros was the factory Camaro ZL1. Specially designed to compete in the NHRA Super Stock drag classes, Chevrolet made it an option under the COPO system (code 9560). The cars began as SS396/375bhp Camaros with the F41 suspension.

chevrolet camaro 69 zl1

Developed from a power unit used in Can-Am racing, the ZL-1 engine was built of cast aluminum to reduce overall weight by more than 100 pounds. Installed in just 69 Camaros, the optional engine added a staggering $4,160 to the $2,726 base price of the car and was available on special order only. This is one of two ZL-1s equipped with the COPO Yenko Sports Car Conversion, which included a front anti-sway bar, special wheels and a 140-mile per hour speedometer and other performance enhancements. With fewer than 24,000 miles on the odometer, this rare Camaro survives in unrestored condition. Price when new: $6,866. (from the collection of Dr. Greg Joseph and Family).

The SS trim and engine were deleted, and the 427 engine, cowl-induction hood, front disc brakes, a choice of heavy duty 4 speed transmissions or Turbo Hydra-matic, and a 4:10 posi axle were added. But instead of the regular iron-block and head L72 found in the dealer installed Camaros, the ZL1 sported aluminum heads and the first aluminum block ever made by Chevrolet. It shared the L88 aluminum head/iron block's engine rating of 430 bhp but made closer to 500 bhp -- making it probably the most powerful engine Chevrolet ever offered to the public. And the engine weighed just 500 pounds, the same as Chevy's 327 small block.

The car was blessed with a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty and was fully street legal. With factory exhausts and tires, it turned low 13s; with headers and slicks, it could turn 11.6s @ 122mph. This was the fastest car ever produced by Chevrolet. Performance had its price - $4,160 for the ZL1 engine alone pushing the price of the Camaro ZL1 to an unbelieveable $7,200 (about double the price for a SS396 Camaro).

Chevy needed to build 50 to qualify the car for racing, and in the end built 69 Camaros and 2 Corvettes with the ZL-1 engine. Their high price made them difficult to sell and at least 12 engines were removed and about 30 cars were returned back to Chevrolet.

It took until the early 1970s to sell them all. One can only wonder what they are worth today.

(COPO 9560) 427/430bhp: 0-60 in 5.3 sec, 1/4 mile in 13.16 sec @ 110 mph.

The original ZL1 Camaro was brainstormed by Chevy dealer Fred Gibbs. In 1969, Fred Gibb Chevrolet contacted the General Motors factory to produce the Camaro with the ZL1 all-aluminum 427 engine. The factory would agree to do it if Gibb placed a minumum order of 50 cars. Gibb initiated the order and this was the beginning of the COPO 9560 Camaro.

The first two ZL1 Camaros arrived at Gibb's dealership on a snowy evening in the last days of December 1968. The agreement GM made with Gibb was to have ZL1 cars available for sale prior to the end of 1968. The GM factory delivered as promised.

Unfortunately, Gibb had neglected to ask about the cost of these cars. The window sticker price was over $7,200. Needless to say, not many Camaro enthusiasts were eager to step up and pay a price that was almost twice the cost of the COPO 9561 cast iron 427. Due to this "sticker shock", negotiations transpired between Fred Gibb and the Chevrolet factory managers. It was agreed that Gibb could return most of the cars. It was the first time in history that the factory took back cars from a dealership. The unsold cars were re-invoiced at the factory and redistributed to other high-performance Chevrolet dealerships.

In addition to the original 50 ZL1 Camaros shipped to Gibb Chevrolet, an additional 19 ZL1's were ordered through the 1969 production year by various other high-performance Chevrolet dealerships. This ended the 1969 ZL1 Camaro production run at a total of 69 cars. Fred Gibb Chevrolet did manage to sell 13 of the original 50 that he ordered. (source: Kevin Suydam Collection)

Restored engine from ZL1 #26. How much real power? Although rated at 430 horsepower by the old method, Chevrolet never released actual power figures for the as-installed production ZL-1 engine. Numbers were tossed around for years until Bill Porterfield decided to find out. Bill had acquired an original block from one of the cars and enough NOS parts to complete another engine. The engine was subjected to 5 levels of test. RPM was limited to 6750. The ZL-1 was a legitimate 500+ horsepower engine.

Don Yenko, the son of the founder of Yenko Chevrolet, was the man behind the '69 COPOs, and was probably the best known and largest supplier of muscle cars back in the 60's and 70's. In '69, Yenko used the COPO pipeline to get factory 427s in Camaros.

yenko logo2

Perhaps the best know of the racing dealers is Don Yenko, from Cannonsberg, Pennsylvania. Most of these early Yenko Camaros went to Chicago, where they were distributed by Span, Inc. for Yenko Sportscars. There were 54 Camaros built in '67, making this one of the rarest of Camaros. There are only 12 surviving cars known, and 9 of those are being raced or are in very bad condition.

yenkosc 427 logo

Wanting more performance than the 396 Camaro would give, Yenko Sportscars created the Yenko Super Camaro by installing the 427 cid 425 hp engine.

By the end of 1967 it was clear that Yenko couldn't keep up with the demand for 427 Camaros, so he approached Chevrolet about the possibility of getting factory equipped 427 Camaros. Chevy was hesitant about this at first, but the people in the Special Projects Division were eager to give it a shot. According to Jim Mattison, who worked in the division at the time, the result was that Chevy agreed to supply factory equipped 427 Camaros to Yenko in 1968 on the condition that he keep it a secret. Don Yenko agreed, and until recently it was thought that all 68 of the 1968 Yenko Camaros had dealer installed engines, just like the 67's, but they were actually factory installed. At the end of the 68 model year the cars had proved to be both reliable and desireable. This led to the birth of two special options for 1969, COPO 9561 and COPO 9737.

The Central Office Production Order (COPO) was a back door around Chevrolet's performance limits. The first COPO 9561 cars were delivered to Yenko Chevrolet in January, 1969.

The first COPO 9561 cars were delivered to Yenko Chevrolet in January, 1969. Cars built through late May had a Stewart Warner 970 custom service tachometer with a special sending unit installed. Later cars received the factory tach. Your Yenko could be ordered with or without stripes and spoilers. The stripe package included "SYC" decals.

In 1969 the Yenco SYC could be ordered with either the M22 4-speed or the Turbohydramatic transmission for $4245.00. It is not known exactly how many Yenko Camaros were made in 1969. The best figure is either 199 or 201.

Cadillac's magnificent design and craftsmanship are dramatically displayed in the Sixty-Two Convertible. Behind a windshield of epic proportions, the driver surveys the world about him over a remarkable, low, broad expanse of hood and fenders, flowing together in one smooth, rhythmic line.

The 1959 Cadillac has become a pop culture icon by virtue of its epic tailfins, but it's important for another reason. Along with the rest of the General Motors line for 1959, which was largely a response to the success of Chrysler's 1957 offerings, it established the general wide-low-long dimensions for full-size cars that were the rule until 1977.

Cadillac unveiled an all new car for 1957. This Hearly Earl creation was a sharper-edged evolution of the 1954-56 "Standard of The World".

1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible.

Innovations abounded, including an unusual X-shaped frame, optional air-ride suspension and a radically curved wraparound windshield.

As before, Cadillac customers could choose from two convertibles... the mainstream Series 62 and the ultra prestigious Eldorado Biarritz.

Inspired by Motorama show cars, the 1957 Biarritz featured exclusive rear sheet metal with American-style fins protruding from softly rounded, European-look rear fenders.

The rear fenders were commonly referred to as "chipmunk cheeks". This concept was used for two years, but did not spawn any imitators.

The Eldorado Biarritz featured a 365 cubic inch, 325 hp V8 with twin Carter four-barrell carburetors, four-speed Hydra-Matic drive and "Sabre Spoke" aluminum wheels. List price of the Eldorado was $7,286, more than $2,000 above a series 62. Only 1,800 were built.

1977-91 Eldorado Biarritz.
Unlike the Fleetwood and de Ville models, Eldorado didn't have a unique luxury package to provide it with a title change (such as the "d'Elegance" package).

This was rectified in 1977 with the "Biarritz" package. Trim differences on the 1977 and 1978 models included stainless steel trim on the hood, doors and rear fenders. The rear half of the roof was covered with a heavily padded landau vinyl top accented with "opera" lights.

Biarritz script adorned the trunk lid, landau roof and glove box door. The interior featured "pillowed"-style velour or leather seating. Starting in 1979, the roof was capped with stainless steel, reminiscent of the ultra-luxury 1957 and 1958 Eldorado Brougham.

The Biarritz option stayed with the Eldorado through the 1991 model year. Some of the original styling cues vanished after the 1985 model year, such as the brushed aluminum roofing and the interior seating designs, but "Biarritz" remained unique just the same.
