BMW's "new class" model program proved to be exceptionally successful. Leading international drivers demonstrated its qualities as an all-around sports car in innumerable events. On the Nürburgring Hubert Hahne set up a new lap record. Together with Jacky Ickx he won the 24-hour race in Spa-Francor-Champs and captured the European Touring Car Championship title in 1966.
